How we produce cast rings in our goldsmith's workshop

Step 1. Creating a wax model for casting.

As the name suggests, our cast ring is made by molding material into a ring, in this case, silver. The first stage is to produce a casting model made of wax that is formed according to shape the design requirements of the ring (see Photo 1).

Step 2: Preparing a plaster mold.

Now a casting mold of plaster is produced by filling the wax model with plaster. After the wax model has been removed, runners were incorporated, etc., the casting mold may then be reused for quite some time for several casting operations.

Step 3: Remove the casting runners.

After casting, the molded ring will have protuberances in the silver resulting from the material being poured into the mold previously. These are can removed using a fine saw.

Step 4: Trimming and polishing.

Any remaining runner burrs and silver protuberances must be sanded and polished.

Step 5: Adjust ring to the desired ring size.

As we adjust our silver rings individually for each customer, we carry this out by using a special machine that widens or compresses the ring to the desired size.

Step 6: Setting the ring.

Following the power-intensive work of sawing and sizing the ring, the silver ring may still deviate slightly from its ideal shape. Therefore, we will manually form the ring into a nice round shape and ensure that it is well-proportioned.

Step 7: Blanching the silver.

To achieve the desired purity of our white-silvery surfaces, we treat the silver surface with a short flame—this process is known as “blanching.”

Step 8: The finishing touch.

Finally, once the ring meets our high standard of quality assurance, we gently polish the ring once more and the process is complete!
